Documents
As we get more and more serious about collecting and
documenting firearms, the need for original source material comes to
the fore.
The most common and arguably easiest to obtain is
original factory catalogs. While these are valuable for showing us what
WAS available, they
are equally valuable for showing us what was NOT available. A fellow with a 5
inch Colt SAA could examine all the catalogs and find no mention of a 5
inch as a factory offering. That doesn't necessarily mean it is
spurious; simply that it wasn't a catalog offering.
While the lack of information is frustrating it does
help by showing that other sources have to be viewed, such as cutom gun
records, special contracts, etc.
My understanding of U.S. copyright law (as a layman)
is that, generally, if it is 75 years old or older, it is in the public
domain. Unless indicated otherwise, the catalogs and such presented
here fall in the 75+ year range. If, for some reason, they are not out
of copyright, please let me know and I'll take action.
The catalogs are saved as .pdf files. There is a
brief description of each one, describing things such as what arms are
listed, special announcements, etc.
